I hate hiking.
Just kidding….
I love hiking, personally.
The nature, the views, being on the move, crushing that huge hill. All of it. But not everyone enjoys it. And they’ll let you know they don’t when you’re trying to gleefully talk about it. Some are very real reasons, while others are simply for your viewing pleasure.
Here’s my collection of favorite reasons for people hating hiking, with sources.
1) Big snakes. With fangs
“It’s hard. It’s work. It’s dangerous. There are things lurking out there like bugs, bad bugs. And snakes. Big snakes. With fangs.”
Rane Kelze, Article on Medium: I Hate Hiking…A Lot
Snakes can be a worry while out on the trails. Ones that rattle. Ones that hang out down by the creek as you refill water. Or even ones that show face before slowly creeping back down into a hole inside an Appalachian Trail shelter….nope.
Be sure to read the whole post. Has a lot more interesting points.
2) Those Damn Chipmunks
So many great zero context ‘reasons’ to hate hiking in this one. I can definitely relate to a bunch of these. Pulled from YouTuber Kyle Hates Hiking’s channel. Check out the video and give him a like and subscribe!
Although I’ve never had a bad run in with chipmunks, I have had episodes with sugar gliders. First night out doing a month long section hike on the AT, me and buddy heard a bunch of odd chirping noises. Got out of our tents to find 3 or 4 sugar gliders jumping tree to tree then to my buddies food bag. They got into the bag and snacked away on some of his peanut butter crackers. It was pure chaos.
3) Sticky and Slimy and Smelly Sweat
Pulled from the blog A Dangerous Business. Arthur Amanda Williams lists not liking sweating as a possible reason for hating hiking.
Because it’s sticky and slimy and smelly and makes you not want to take any photos proving you’ve completed the stupid hike because you look so gross.

4) It’s Not Fun
Here’s a Reddit listing from the popular “Unpopular Opinion” forum:
Hiking is not fun, enjoyable, relaxing or remotely worth it…..I live in the pacific north west and at the end of the day I still cannot grasp those who enjoy hiking. I hate the bugs, the sweat, and just about everything about it.

5) Having To Walk Back
Don’t you hate it when you realize you have to walk back on a hike. Reaching the summit of the mountain on an out and back trail was only half the journey. Not you gotta turn around and do the same distance back to your car. It’s the worst.
6) Hiking Is Boring
Here’s another one for Reddit’s Unpopular Opinion forum:
“Seriously Its not that I don’t like nature but hiking is 90% staring at the ground making sure you’re able to place your foot correctly….”
